Weekend explorations: Northern Manhattan

The Cloisters are a tranquil museum of medieval art, an oasis in New York. The collection includes many architectural elements, displayed as part of the museum itself. These marble arches and columns (circa 1130-40) were from a monastery in southern France, abandoned during the French Revolution.

Not sure why but I had had not heard of The Cloisters till now. I love these columns and there is a herb garden too I believe.

You had me hooked as soon as I saw the arches Lulu. I can just feel the tranquility oozing from this image.

Great photo! Can't believe they would have abandoned these columns. I'd love to visit this museum one day.

Paul - it's a bit of a hidden gem (and for Europeans, may feel one degree removed from the actual structures :). The herb gardens are indeed a part of it, and are lovely too.

PerthDailyPhoto - it's super soothing and tranquil :) There are also views down the Hudson river and the cliffs across the way.

Adele - it's amazing what a time of such upheaval can do. Hope you get to visit one day, you'd never think you were in NY :)

Never too late to join in on adding a comment (I hope). I am catching up a little. You positioned yourself in just the right spot. Beautiful photograph. Love the detail.

Hmmmm, the revolution destroyed so many treasures... Never been to the Cloisters. You can add them to my list of to-do NYC!

I very much like the angle you took this photo from.

cieldequimper - walking around the Cloisters, you see so many objects that came out of the upheaval of the revolution, it really hits home... Yes, add it to your NYC to-do list! (I thought Europeans might find the museum a tad too removed from the originals they can see at home, but noticed many visitors *were* European :)

EG CameraGirl - thanks so much! :)
