Postcard from Hawaii: Endangered species

The endangered Hawaiian green turtle (using Mr. L's newer Lumix camera!) off Magic Island, Honolulu...

The critically-endangered Hawaiian monk seal (only 1,200 in the wild) at remote Kaena Point trail...

And that's the Hawaiian flag at bottom - an American state flag with British banner is also rare!

I hope that protection as an endangered species will be enough and that pollution won't do the rest... I had no clue there were still Union Jacks around!

Fotos que dan un cierto sosiego en el día a día, si que me resulta en mi opinión muy paradójica esa bandera que comentas.
Un saludo, Angel

Excellent wildlife photos, (always fresher with a new camera). The state flag of Hawaii looks festive. Sadly we still have the Union Jack in our Aussie flag - sore point.

OK I am jealous. I have never seen any kind of turtle in the wild. Seals we have plenty of but not around here. I think that fishermen are partly to blame for a decline in seals, they forget that seals cannot eat but fish.

I want to go there right now. What a glorious beach

What a collection, Lulu. You are really pulling out all the stops now. Wonderful reflection of a beautiful 50th State. There will be loads who will be interested in the flag. Great touch! Five gold stars for you!

Gorgeous Hawaiian collection here Lulu. It never ceases to amaze me how we humans can let 'endangered species' even occur!

cieldequimper - I do too, it's sad that there should be so many endangered species in such a (relatively) remote, tiny place. I think this must be the only American flag with the Union Jack!:)

a.s.m. - thank you! I've also found it somewhat paradoxical, but amusing, that the Hawaiian flag includes the Union flag:)

Peter - thank you! I had wondered what people thought about the Union Jack on the Australian flag, in Hawaii people have a sort of oh-well attitude (they'd rather be surfing!:)

Paul - the turtles are luckily rebounding in Hawaii (though sadly declining elsewhere) so more abundant sightings now. Re: the seals (sharply declining) - one of the theories is indeed scarcity in their food chain.

Mo - thanks! It's a gorgeous, if remote, spot and well worth the trek!

LOLfromPasa - thanks so much! I thought you would know about the Hawaiian flag ;-) And, well, pretty much everything else in the post - it's such a small world!

PerthDailyPhoto = thank you, but it's also crazy to me we should have so many endangered species around (esp. in Hawaii, which is so small and faraway from much of the world).

Tanya - thanks! It's a funny little flag:) So cool you've been there multiple times!

William - thank you! It's a looong flight but worth it for that relaxed pace of life:)

EG CameraGirl - I know! Luckily some species are rebounding, but not enough.
