$100,000 Reward!

Just a nod to last night's Oscar (Academy Award) nominees. A current rare documents exhibit at Firestone Library includes this 1865 "Wanted" poster for John Wilkes Booth and conspirators in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln: "The Murderer of our late beloved President, Abraham Lincoln, is still at large."

That was a lot of money...

Very timely, sadly all the Aussies at the Oscars came away without the main prize.

So relevant Lulu. That's quite a sum for those days. Did they ever find out who murdered him? (I know I should know!)

Yes, a lot of money then (Peter, the race was a close one this year! PerthDailyPhoto, yup it was John Wilkes Booth in the end, a disgruntled actor to put it mildly! They managed to catch him within 2 weeks or so.)

I finished re-reading Manhunt by James Swanson recently. Quite a story to the search for Booth and his associates!

And yes, that was a tremendous amount of money. In the end, the reward money did get divided up into pieces.

I love how the poster refers to Lincoln as "our late beloved President"... I so want to the movie!! (this wanted poster though is a bit creepy to me)...

So interesting! I didn't remember that it took that long to catch him. (Shame on me...). I think I'll have to read "Manhunt."

I am gradually catching up with my blog reading, Lulu! This one is a gem. Amazing that a poster can make such a terrific photo :).
