Black squirrel

Our black squirrels are many - they're the town mascot! - but shy. This is the only one I've captured that didn't dart away in a blur. Enjoy your weekend!
***
{Doubtful-but-fun stories: The black squirrels were created in a science experiment and protesters released them. Or an eccentric Eastern European ambassador gifted them. Or a local resident obtained them in the 1800s, to reflect one of the official Princeton University colors (black/orange)}.

Beautiful animal. I love the legends, reminds me of the Pasadena Parrots.

Hmm, if that's the case, then a few of them escaped into the C&O Canal National Historical Park, fleeing, no doubt, the mad doctor responsible for their creation. :-)

I enjoyed the link Lulu, your town mascot is tres cute.. I've heard some say the squirrel is a bit of a pest, is this so with the black squirrel?

I never heard about the black squirrel and here she is very sweet and lovely.

I love a picture of it and I love also the second picture. They are so wonderful!

And a link told me that black squirrels are not really very rare animals. I wonder do we have them where I live?

I'm amazed you were able to capture this little guy! I wish I could get that close... we have so many grey and black squirrels around our neighborhood, but my boys always end up running after (and scaring) them ;) ...Bon week-end Lulu!

Black squirrels are a melanistic color phase of the Grey Squirrel, originally most common along the North shore of Lake Erie

Last spring black and gray squirrels were plentiful in my area. Two hawks moved in they trimmed the numbers down.

Cute! Interesting stories about why your squirrels are black. We have mostly black squirrels here.

Black squirrels! I only live two states away, but don't think the black squirrels have made an appearance up here.

Princeton's mascot is a rodent??? Oooookay...

:p

Maybe they have bred with an Australian possum, similar colouring. Love those other theories too.
