Weekend explorations: Vintage underground, New York

For Grand Central Terminal's centennial, 42nd Street Crosstown Shuttle riders were treated to vintage 1940s and 1950s subway trains all weekend (still got you crosstown in a New York minute). Mr. L shot the vintage ad (2nd photo): "WAGE WAR ON GERMS - cover your coughs & sneezes PLEASE!!".

What a great idea! I still remember riding on the old Paris underground when the seats were wooden!

Fantastic! Vintage for sure. Neat that someone is taking a photo inside train too. Super shots from both of you :).

A sweet capture, through the window... and the subway sun, a perennial message.

Neat colourful capture. It's amazing that these trains are still in running condition.

Hahaha, great poster - it should be reproduced on ALL public transport EVERYWHERE!!!

I've often wondered what a 'New York minute' actually is ...

Lulu, I would love to have a ride on this vintage train. Interesting how did people feel having a ride like this.

And I like an Ad very, very much!

Your picture is so great that I want to step into it and appear on this train. That is a WOW picture!

Thanks so much everyone! (Red Nomad OZ - the NY minute basically means a very quick instant, for all those rushed New Yorkers:) Trying my best to get Mr. L to contribute more, haha.

Nice shot of life in a subway car. No one seems to know you're photographing them. As for the poster, they should keep that one up to remind people about covering up.

The sign certainly does look quite vintage!

What a wonderful way to celebrate! I'm surprised the vintage trains ran as well as they did, being more than 50 years old! But they sure are pretty... I love the photojournalistic style of your shot Lulu.

If they put on any of the cars from the 70s and 80s, take a cab. That was the era when the subway was simply horrible.
